The following blog post is an attempt to elucidate the inner workings of Gsrld.dll, a dynamic library found on L.A. Noire for Windows 7 that has caused significant dilemmas for authors of utility programs that interact with the game software. Information about the nature and exploitation of these dilemmas can be found at http://gdfrrr.blogspot.com/. We hope that this document will help to better explain why such glitches happen, and encourage software authors to collaborate in order to avoid making such mistakes in future releases of their work-related utilities and libraries alike. Kindly note: this article was written by an entirely different individual than those who authored the aforementioned blog at http://gdfrrr. blogspot.com/. This article has been reproduced here by the authors' explicit authorization so as to ensure its wide dissemination throughout the community. The dilemmas presented by Gsrld.dll were first observed and documented by a group of enthusiasts who, due to the nature of their job, wish to remain anonymous as a group, but have been recognized as such by various other users as being those who developed the "NGRSD" library for use with older versions of L.A. Noire on Windows XP systems that have been patched with Patch v1.1 (i.e., versions 1.00 and 1.01). This is further confirmed by the fact that they have most likely been using older versions of L.A. Noire, as the most recent version on the market at the time of writing this article was v1.01, but also due to the fact that their job does not require them to deal with newer versions of L.A. Noire software as they are currently not available on Windows 7 systems, and thus cannot utilize Gsrld.dll in their work as it does not ship with those versions of L.A. Noire software (v1.00 and v1.01). Since the exploits performed by the NGRSD library were only documented for use on L.A. Noire v1.00 and v1.01, it seems highly unlikely that the authors of Gsrld.dll had any intention of targeting users who had patched their game with Patch v1.1 (which adds Steamworks features to L.A Noire that will eventually be added to older versions via an official patch). However, due to how Gsrld.dll is structured (i.e. dynamically linked against a host process as opposed to statically linked as is the case with most libraries), as well as the nature of the underlying host process itself, users who have patched their versions of L.A. Noire with Patch v1.1 and who run Steam version 5.0.4 (the latest nightly build available at the time of writing this article) and whose versions of L.A. Noire are running on Windows 7 systems may encounter issues when attempting to use Gsrld.dll in their applications, which can lead to an absence of functionality in these applications that were designed for use with older versions of L.A Noire that may be patched with Patch v1. eccc085e13
